Organic Farmers, Producers, Gardeners and Chemical Accreditation Training
Do you need Accreditation?
If you use Veterinary Medicines or Agricultural Chemicals as part of your work (this includes employees), all users must complete an Accredited Chemical Training course and maintain your competence every 5 years.
The NSW EPA states “The legal definition of a Pesticide under the Pesticides Act, covers herbicides, Insecticides, Fungicides, Rodenticides and many other types of substances. This misunderstanding arises because the term Pesticide is sometimes wrongly used to describe Insecticides only.”
Pesticides maybe natural or synthetically produced and are registered for use in NSW by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) and regulated under the Pesticides Act 1999 and Pesticides Regulation 2017
There are many Natural (Organic) Substances that can be used as Pesticides for example:
Pyrethin
Garlic
Eucalyptus
Tea Tree Oil
Some natural or organic products may have environmental and safety advantages over synthetics, but many can be toxic to humans and harmful to the environment.
Pyrethrin is an excellent example as it is highly toxic to bees and fish if allowed to enter waterways.
Pyrethrin, Garlic, Tea tree and Eucalyptus oil are all EPA classified as a conventional Chemical Pesticide, when used as one. As a result, they are also subject to the same controls as Pesticides produced synthetically.
Commercially available products of this type can only be used if they are registered by the APVMA.
If you are using these products, you must comply with the specific requirements of the guideline as you would for synthetic pesticides.
A general rule of thumb is any organic product used to control pests, weeds or disease becomes classed as a pesticide, so falls under the same rules as synthetic pesticides, therefore the user is required to complete Chemical Accreditation training.
When using a natural or synthetic product, the main objective of training is how to find the relevant information from the label and SDS, apply the product in a safe and accurately way with regards to minimizing the impact to people, animals, property, and the environment whilst achieving the required and desirable outcomes.
