Local beef will be back on the menu on Lord Howe Island following the delivery of 21 head of cattle from Macka’s Australian Black Angus Beef at Salt Ash in the Port Stephens region.
“We are very proud to be working closely with the Lord Howe Island Board (LHIB) to select these cattle that are going to make the basis of their herd for the future,” says Robert MacKenzie from Macka’s.
Beef cattle have been grown and raised on the island as long it has been settled, but farmers were forced to destroy their livestock three years ago due to a rodent eradication scheme.
The LHIB says the return of quality breeding animals will contribute to the island’s ability to produce its own food and ultimately community resilience.
Sheep returned to Lord Howe Island in 2020 after a 50-year hiatus following a long journey all the way from Guyra.
